Michigan in July can get very hot, but one of the best ways to cool down is by heading down to a local ice cream parlor and grabbing a cone of a frozen treat. Since it is National Ice Cream Month (we celebrate every month like it’s National Ice Cream Month, to be honest), here are six ice cream shops to check out in metro Detroit.

This downtown Detroit, family owned ice cream shoppe features 17 Michigan Made Hudsonville ice cream flavors. The store also offers milk shakes, Faygo floats, and fruit smoothies.
Erma’s Frozen Custard
What started out as a small custard stand outside of downtown Utica in 1942 has become one of the most popular custard spots in southeast Michigan. Open from April 1 until October 31, Erma’s offers a wide range of Michigan made frozen custards, sundaes, parfaits, shakes, malts, and slushes. With two successful stores in Shelby Township and Warren, Erma’s just opened a new location in St. Clair Shores as well.
What Up Dough?
For those looking for more than just ice cream, What Up Dough? offers a great alternative with their homemade Icebergers. The Iceberger is an enormous ice cream cookie sandwich where customers can choose between four signature cookies- Mint Chocolate Chocolate, Southern Seduction, P’nut Butter S’more, and Mocha Caramel. Customers can also buy the store’s homemade cookie dough to bake for themselves.
The Chocolate Bar Cafe
Located in Grosse Pointe Woods, The Chocolate Bar Cafe has been satisfying everyone’s sweet tooth since 1921. With an old-fashioned soda fountain, classic sundaes, malts, homemade chocolate, and Alinosi Ice Cream, it’s no wonder why the store has been open for 95 years.
Calder Brothers Dairy
Established in 1946, Calder Brothers Dairy not only makes their own ice cream from their own cows, but they also have a home delivery system that brings the ice cream to you! With over 30 flavors to choose from and other dessert options like sundaes and milkshakes offered at their parlor in Lincoln Park, Calder Brothers Dairy is a great option on a hot summer day.

Open since 1958, Ray’s Ice Cream is one of the premium ice cream shops in Royal Oak. With over 50 flavors to choose from and a 1950s era parlor and soda fountain, Ray’s Ice Cream has something to enjoy.
